InsertLearning was originally conceptualized and developed in 2014 by a group of 7 strangers including 2 teachers from Minnesota named Matt Nupen and Karin Hogen who attended Startup Weekend Twin Cities and won first place with their teams idea after Matt pitched the idea for DocentEDU (InsertLearning, 2021).
Matt and Karin went on to gain guidance from mentors in the field of EdTech by attending conferences shortly after introducing their idea, winning prizes for further investment in their new business and were able to accelerate the development and release of their product DocentEDU to the public. Ben Pederson a lead coder joined the two main creators Matt Nupen and Karin Hogen a bit later on helping to make refinements and tweaks to the product along the way (InsertLearning, 2021).
The idea was backed by OpenStax and Google. By May of 2015 their product had already gained 1000 users and by August of 2015 they had introduced a price point of $40/year or $8/month for their product that would initiate in October of that year with the business plan to reinvest back into the product to improve its functioning further. They went on to integrate into Google Classroom in 2016 and by 2017 they had changed their name and rebranded to InsertLearning (InsertLearning, 2021).
