Limitations

  • Declining use in desktop browsing and therefore browser extensions due to increasing mobile internet only use

  • Recent safety concerns over data being shared via browser extensions (Fowler, 2019)

  • InsertLearning is only compatible with Chrome browsers therefore limiting its audience to Chrome users only

  • The free trial only allows for a short 2 lesson period which may not be enough time for one to sample it

Reflection

Based on the teaching and learning affordances offered by this tool in combination with the low cost of onboarding, I think it is a great investment for schools and teachers to partake in.  It is quite easy to use and as most people have Google Chrome browsers already and are familiar with their use, it is also easy to install.

The InsertLearning website also has tips for how to integrate the tool in the classroom via their ambassadors page and the training package offered as a part of the school payment package is helpful to get teachers using it fast.

This tool allows for teachers to easily create personalized, scafolded and interactive learning content for students based on authentic texts from the internet which allows for a vast array of learning opportunities to be had. For these reasons, I believe it’s a great choice for schools and teachers to begin using it.

That being said, the longevity of its use may not be for too much longer as mobile internet use is said to become the majority vessel for future learning content to be displayed in to which browser extensions are not compatible with. Although this may hamper one wanting to invest their time in learning a new tool such as InsertLearning, the pay-off from the price, easy installation, ease-of-use and flexibility of use may be worth it in the interim between now and the impending future.
